Stouts

Stouts are darker brown or black in color from the ale family. Very heavy tasting, Flavor varies from chocolate to coffee depending on the type and amount of malt used.

Denotes one of the original 30 Beers

Alaskan Brewing Stout

This is an Oatmeal Stout and I usually like them but this didn't do much for me. Not as rich as I would expect.

Anderson Valley Brewing Co Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout

    Great flavor, sweet and smooth.

Bells Special Double Cream Stout

Very rich flavor, a hint of bitterness but a really wonderful stout. I was lucky to find this seasonal on tap with a great recommendation from the bartender.

Bells Expedition Stout

Not as rich and sweet at the previous Double Cream Stout. Great finish, smooth & sweet.

Black Wych English Stout

Interesting dry flavor, I was surprised that it was not a strong stout. It didn't have that typical stout finish.

Breckenridge Brewery Oatmeal Stout

Another good but mildly disappointing oatmeal stout. Seems like the roasted malts were over roasted. The burnt after taste killed the flavor for me.

Brooklyn Brewery Black Chocolate Stout

This very rare seasonal brew was outstanding. This is a milkshake for beer lovers. It is sweet and rich with an outstanding finish. Find this beer!!!!!!!!!!!

Bluegrass Brewing Co. Jefferson Reserve Bourbon Barrel Stout

A bit of a suprise. For the hype and price ( $15 for a 4 pack???) I expected more. Not a overwhelming stout, heavy on the roasted malts but pretty average for a normal stout much less one that had aged in a top shelf bourbon barrel

Coopers Brewery Best Extra Stout

Good strong traditional stout from Australia.

Great Divide Yeti Imperial Stout

Two Words, Roasted Malt. It takes a minute to set your mouth for this stout but once you get going it is interesting. There is some sort of coffee and caramel blend of flavors going on in there with a mild chocolaty taste hidden in there somewhere. The nice little alcohol tang at the finish is not unpleasant or overbearing.

Goose Island Oatmeal Stout

Really like the taste, not a smack you in the head type stout. The flavor is smooth and rich with a little bitterness to set things off.

Guinness Extra Stout

The classic stout, by which all others are judged. I do agree with the experts, Get it on tap somewhere. The bottles and cans, even the pub draught cans, don't do it justice.

HC Berger Brewing Co. Chocolate Stout

This is a repeat from the Microbrew Festival reviews but I found the 2nd time it was kinda flat and the flavor was not as good. I am thinking this is a beer to get out of a tap not a bottle.

Hoosier Ma ( Who's your Ma) Stout, Rock Bottom Brewery Indianapolis

Very Very Sweet Stout, Good, nice and strong but diabetics should watch out.

Jamesport Brewing Co. Dry Stout

With three of us drinking this Stout we came up with three different impressions, all good. We agree that there is a lot going on with this Stout. All the different flavors stand out without blending. Has a smoky finish.

Jamesport Brewing Co. "Nitro" Stout

So we thought we were done drinking, but our server Brian insisted our sampling would not be complete without trying the "Nitro" Stout. This is the standard stout in a nitrogen tap. Brian rushed out our drinks the moment they were poured and we found the Stout took on a whole new life. The chocolate and toffee flavors were more prominent and the taste and finish were much smoother.

Left Hand Brewing Milk Stout

Very, Very sweet stout. They use milk sugar that adds a sweetness that really stands out.

Mackesons XXX Stout

This is a awesome stout!! My favorite of all the original 30 beers. I know this is sacrilege but I like it better than Guinness. I actually did a side by side comparison last St Patrick's day and Mackesons is actually darker than Guinness. This was originally only available as an import, it is now brewed under supervision in the US. It has taken on a different flavor, not quite a sweet a taste and a more hoppy / bitter finish. Not bad, but not the same as the original.

New Holland Brewing The Poet Stout

Great, bold tasting Stout. Nice blend of flavors with subtle hints of coffee and chocolate. Smooth finish, no aftertaste

Oasis Oatmeal Stout

Nice Stout!!! Full flavor not too bitter not too heavy.

O'hara's Celtic Stout

Not real sure what qualifies it a Celtic, but it is however, an excellent stout. It was also voted the #1 stout by the 2000 Millennium Brewing Industry International Awards. Take the time to check this one out.

Old Australia Stout

A classic "coffee beer" as my friend Ed calls them.

Old No. 38 Stout

Another multiple award winning stout. Strong but not overbearing coffee taste. Not an "in your face" kind of stout.

Pipkin Bourbon Barrel Stout.

Stout aged in bourbon barrels. More than a little bit of bourbon flavor to this stuff. It adds a nice bite to the stout.

Rogue Shakespeare Stout.

Much better than the Rogue Cream ale thing. Sweet flavor leans towards an oatmeal stout. This is rapidly becoming my favorite stout.

Steelhead "Extra" Stout

Very full bodied stout!! One of the better domestic stouts.

Sam Adams Cream Stout

Great flavored Stout. Really good blend of malts, it takes Stout in a different direction of taste without losing the traditional stout characteristics. Not too sweet or creamy.

Samuel Smith's Imperial Stout

Hearty Stout with a different type of taste. Not as heavy as a typical stout. It is a different type of taste for a stout.  "Contractors to Her Majesty's Forces." Gold and Silver Medal winner from the International Brewers Exhibition.

Samuel Smith's "the Celebrated" Oatmeal Stout

I have been hit or miss with the Oatmeal stouts.  This was OK I guess, I didn't find much to "celebrate" about. I will try another bottle. I suspect I might have gotten a bad one.

Upstream Brewing Co. Blackstone Stout

Nice stout, teeters on the edge of an oatmeal stout or possibly a mocha stout.

Young's Double Chocolate Stout

Very rich and smooth. Surprisingly not as chocolaty as some of the other chocolate stouts but a really good beer.

Young's Oatmeal Stout from the Ram Brewery London, England.

Strong stout in a pint bottle so drink expediently unless you like warm back wash
